Lawmakers are cued up to examine issues ranging from farm credit to the Endangered Species Act as the House Appropriations Committee meets today to mark up fiscal 2017 spending legislation for the USDA and FDA. The Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee approved the $21.3 billion measure last week, which is $451 million less than the 2016 level. Some Democrats are concerned about the bill, particularly with what they called insufficient funding for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

The Federal Trade Commission's action last week against personal care companies for falsely labeling products as "all natural" has industry attorneys buzzing about whether the move could give more fodder to plaintiffs' lawyers looking to sue food companies. The five companies targeted by FTC made skin care products, including sunscreens and shampoos, which all claimed to be natural but many contained synthetic ingredients. Four of the companies settled with the agency last week, agreeing to not make "similar misrepresentations" without reliable evidence.
