If you plan on going downtown this weekend you should know that Yakima Avenue will be closed as we play host to over 300 basketball teams in the 10th annual Hot Shots Tournament. Opening ceremonies kick of this Sat August 25th at 8AM in the center of downtown. We hope to see you there, and if you need more information click the link below.

Hot Shots launched on Labor Day Weekend in 2003. Directed by the legendary Mel Moore, Yakima’s initial 3-on-3 street basketball tournament drew 217 teams. The first event was played on 20 courts spread throughout several downtown streets.

In 2004 and 2005, Hot Shots featured 24 courts and expanded to North 3rd Street next to Ron’s Coin & Books. Over 250 teams have played each of the last two years with nearly 1,000 players displaying their talents on the streets of downtown Yakima.

In 2005, Mel Moore stepped down as event director for Hot Shots. The Yakima Valley Sports Commission staff in partnership with a local organizing committee and Yakima Parks and Recreation, who handles registration, continue to operate Hot Shots. In 2010, a record 366 teams registered for Hot Shots. If you have any questions about Hot Shots, you may contact the Yakima Parks and Recreation at 509-575-6020 or the Yakima Valley Sports Commission at 509-575-3010.

The mission of Hot Shots is to provide players with a great event to showcase their skills and have fun against outstanding competition. At the same time, the Yakima Valley Sports Commission welcomes our out-of-town visitors who come here for the event. Hot Shots helps support the work of the Sports Commission in marketing the Yakima Valley as a sports event destination throughout the Pacific Northwest. Come and enjoy the fruits of the Yakima Valley’s bountiful harvest while you prove that you are indeed a Hot Shot.
