I was thinking about Christmas gifts and the types I like to give that don't involve extra cost to the person receiving the gift -- like items that need batteries. I think about the worst gift I could give someone would be a puppy. Here's why.

Basically, it's my way of saying, "Here, you take care of this."

Now, before I go off too much, a puppy might make a fun Christmas memory if your children have been begging for one and you've decided it's time to have a new member of the family. That's perfectly fine.

I'm talking about if you surprise someone with one and now, all of a sudden, they have a new puppy to care for that they might not be ready for.

If you're not financial prepared, a new puppy can be draining on the wallet. Food and health products alone are a longtime investment. It's not like buying a collar once and having it last for years and years.

Again, if they would like a puppy, that's fine. But make sure they can handle a puppy before you spring it on them.

These are my thoughts, but what do you think?
