Anne Frank Museum Reps Defend Justin Bieber Over Guestbook Gaffe

Justin Bieber ruffled a lot of feathers for a dumb, insensitive and inconsiderate comment he wrote in the guestbook after visiting the Anne Frank Museum in Holland over the weekend. However, the officials and reps at the museum are defending Bieber and his guestbook gaffe.

So what did he say? He basically said he hoped Frank, the most visible victim of the Holocaust, thanks to her diaries detailing her how she hid from the Nazis, would be a Belieber, which set off a storm of criticism and “WTF was he thinking?” comments.

The Biebs’ comment was as follows: “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a Belieber (fan).”

We tried to rationalize it upon hearing it, thinking that The Biebs ineffectively communicated the notion that he felt Frank, who was 15 when she died, should have been enjoying the activities that normal teens engage in, rather than hiding from and fighting for survival against the Nazi occupation and the threat of concentration camps. It was a clumsy comment, but was likely one not made with malice. It was not ill-intentioned.

Spokeswoman Annemarie Bekker defended Biebs. She saw it as nothing more than a teen making an innocent comment, saying, “He’s a 19-year-old boy taking the effort to come and see the museum, and we’d like to point that out, and I think it’s quite innocent what he put down.”

A second rep also spoke out on Bieber’s behalf, expressing gratitude that the teen visited the museum and spreading the word, albeit via some negative press for himself. Maatje Mostart said, “He’s 19. It’s a crazy life he’s living, he didn’t mean bad. And also it’s nice that he made the effort, he didn’t have to come.”

The Biebs has been mocked for his comments, which were interpreted in multiple ways.

Comedian Ricky Gervais took aim in a series of tweets, posted below. At the end of the day, Gervais thinks that The Biebs put his foot in his mouth, but not because he’s a jerk.

If anything, The Biebs’ visit to the museum will help generate some more interest among his young fans about Anne Frank and her story. Hopefully, they will educate themselves about what she went through. That’s what’s really important.
