‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Unveils New Cast Members, Teaser, Oh God, It’s Happening
Good morning, happy Monday. Have you settled in at work, shaken the snow off your boots, maybe had a cup of coffee? Good, now hold onto your goddamn hat, because Star Wars is happening again.
Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult Have Slick Sci-Fi Haircuts in the ‘Equals’ Trailer
In the distant future, humankind has completely eradicated the scourge of emotion. More importantly, they have eradicated the scourge of bad haircuts. Everyone in the future has slick, immaculately coiffed hairdos perfectly complemented by an ensemble of crisp stainless whites. The future looks so clean you could eat off of it, and yet even in this antiseptic utopia, trouble’s a-brewing. There’s a lethal virus going around, and while the trailer embedded above dare not speak its name, we don’t share the same reservations. The leads of Drake Doremus’ festival sensation Equals have a bad case of ‘the feels’.
How the Oscars Plan to Cut Down on Lengthy Acceptance Speeches
Yesterday, at the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the organization pulled back the curtain on a new innovation designed to streamline acceptance speeches.
It Finally Happened, Someone Made a TV Miniseries for Instagram
In a development that sounds like something out of Infinite Jest (currently celebrating its 20th anniversary!), it finally happened. Someone has made a miniseries to be distributed via the popular photo-sharing social media platform Instagram...
Check Out This Fan-Made ‘Ratatouille’ LEGO Set
Toy block company LEGO runs an online program called LEGO Ideas, where anyone is free to make a profile and use it to design new sets of their own imagining. It works almost like a Kickstarter for LEGOs: the crowd can submit their own concepts for new products, and if they’re able to rally enough support around their proposed project from their fellow users, then the top brass at LEGO will actuall
Batman Will Be a Killer in ‘Batman vs. Superman’ Says Producer
It’s a crying shame that Marlon Wayans locked down the title Fifty Shades of Black for his low-rent spoof film set to debut this Friday. That could’ve been a tidily apt label for Zack Snyder’s upcoming superhero crossover Batman vs...

The New ‘Angry Birds’ Trailer Is Urine-Drinking Fun For the Whole Family
Even as video games go, the mobile app Angry Birds is pretty conceptually thin. There are birds. They are angry, ostensibly because green pigs have constructed elaborate castles all over their bird-world, and nobody likes developers. The birds live only to slingshot themselves at high speeds into said castles, destroying them and hopefully eliminating all pigs in the process...
Charlotte Rampling Claims Oscar Diversity Controversy is ‘Racist to Whites’
British actress Charlotte Rampling was one of the lower-profile performers to secure a nomination at this year’s Academy Awards, impressing voters with her devastating and controlled performance in Andrew Haigh’s relationship drama 45 Years. Ms. Rampling is currently sixty-nine years old, which is to say she was born in 1946 and came of age during the ’50s and ’60s — a different time, to be sure. Like many individuals at a relatively older age, she reflects the social norms of her era, many of which society has since advanced past. Older folks sometimes express opinions that younger generations find objectionable, and while such comments ought not to be excused outright, they also must be considered within the cultural context from they originated.
One Movie Theater Is Showing ‘Groundhog Day’ For 24 Straight Hours on Groundhog Day
In the comedy classic Groundhog Day, Bill Murray’s curmudgeonly newscaster Phil Connors starts to lose his mind after repeatedly living the exact same February 2 over and over again. For the low price of ten pounds (approximately $14 in real money), patrons of Liverpool’s Small Cinema can now live Phil’s Groundhog Day experience for real — but not the part where he seduces beautiful women, or becomes a better person, or is Bill Murray. Really just the repetition and its accompanying descent into madness.
Jennifer Lawrence Is Going Deep Undercover to Play Fidel Castro’s Lover in ‘Marita’
Academy Award-winning actress and chronic over-faller Jennifer Lawrence has played her fair share of femmes fatale, even at her relatively green age of 25. There was Ree Dolly, the hardscrabble femme from Winter’s Bone who proved decidedly fatal to the unfortunate squirrels she hunted and skinned with her bare hands...
Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs Issues Statement on Oscar Diversity
The greatest outrage stirred by last week’s announcement of the Oscar nominees was not the Best Picture snub for Carol or the absurd exclusion of Todd Haynes from the Best Director category, but rather the troubling homogeneity of the twenty men and women nominated in the acting categories. Specifically, many have taken issue with the fact that this year’s Oscar slate looks about as white as a Whole Foods before noon on a Sunday. The social media hashtag OscarsSoWhite resurfaced within minutes after the nomination announcement had finished, and Spike Lee has even called for a boycott of the ceremony as a response to the blatant lack of diversity in this year’s picks.
