What an accomplishment! Lewis and Clark Middle School's band and orchestra earned a perfect score at a Yakima Valley Music Educators Association competition held at Highland High School today (April 18). It's the first time a band has ever scored 100 percent at a YVMEA competition.
I am so glad that Off The Record is still around. It makes me happy that there are still ways to buy music rather than just a download. I love the old-school sound vinyl makes when that diamond needle drops.
The Yakima YWCA is a powerful place in itself. They help women who've survived domestic violence and their children face the world, take charge of their own lives and get back to being the women they know they are. To get back to being the mothers that they know they are, as well.
Believe it or not, summer is almost here. So now it's time for stores to have spring sales. You name it, something is on sale in April. April is usually the best time to find excellent deals on all kinds of things. The most popular things that go on sale really aren't a shock, though.
Well, here we go again. Someone spent money on a study that we already knew. You shouldn't walk on escalators. You should just stand still and enjoy the ride because it slows down if you try to skip the steps.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner and civil rights movement leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn. He changed my life forever and I was only 2. My mom used to remind me as I got older of a man who was tired of there being a split in this world. She told of a man who was black and was smarter than anyone would ever be. I was so happy she told me these stories, because I might never have really known about him until I got older.
Every now and again, I complain about not having anything to do in the Yakima Valley. But I guess I should have paid closer attention -- there is a ton of stuff to do. I just needed to look harder. Thanks to the great artist Christine Mendoza from Paint Nite Yakima, there is now something really fun to do. I also had no idea I could paint!
Reading is so important. It helps you improve your vocabulary and expand your mind. TV has really taken away from our imagination, that's for sure. It is also exciting when our libraries in the Yakima Valley come up with something new for us to discover -- especially new authors for us to read. Yakima Libraries is beginning a new series called "Authors Out Loud." How exciting!
The 2017 Spring Unforgettable Bridal Gala was a huge success and a lot of fun this past weekend. MEGA 99.3 and 107.3 KFFM enjoyed dancing to wedding music, giving away prizes -- and taking lots of photos!
Recent reports say that Donald Trump wants to do away with after-school programs for 2 million children. I am almost positive that this is not a good idea. I have volunteered for many after-school programs in my life. I have helped with my daughters over the years, and as far as I can tell, after-school programs are much needed in our communities.
Chuck Berry was a true genius. He shaped many different kinds of music. Old school music may have not happened the way it did if it weren't influenced by the great Chuck Berry. We lost him on Saturday (March 18), but for us old schoolers, Chuck Berry will never die.
