Rik Mikals

I’ve been up and down the radio dial as the famous "WKRP" line goes. I started right out of high school in 1988 in my hometown of Clarkston, Wash,, at KCLK – a country station -- and from there moved all over Idaho, Montana, California and Washington state at various radio stations. I was on KMPS in Seattle in the 1990s and moved to Yakima in 1998 as program director of KFFM. I moved again and again until I was in Bakersfield, Calif,, and then Tri-Cities, and then back to Yakima, and again to Tri-Cities and more! I bought a farm in Prosser a few years back with my wife Megan, and we have three great dogs named Phoebe, Barkley and Roxy. My son is an aspiring musician and plays, performs and writes original music. I also have a stepson named Kyran. I’m known for having a never-ending knowledge of pop culture and easily get addicted to TV reality shows. I love "Star Trek," Mustangs (the car) and '80s music. I’m a huge comic book fan, having a comic collection easily totaling more than 6,000 comics.

Rik’s ’90s Lost Classic: Paula Cole ‘Where Have All …’ [VIDEO]

I grew up listening to the radio, in an era when you couldn't just dial up a song anytime you wanted. You were at the mercy of your local DJ.

You had to sit by the radio with a tape recorder, and when a song came on that you liked, you pressed "record," hoping to grab the song in its entirety. The only issue was that at times the disc jockey's voice covered over your song. For me that didn't matter, though -- it just made the mix tape more interesting. I dedicate this blog to the various songs that have come and gone, but will forever remain in that Walkman of the past.

What If Marvel Comic Book Characters Had A Facebook [VIDEO]

I am so pumped up for the premiere of Marvel's Dr. Strange on November 4th. You can bet I'll have my feet kicked up on the back of a seat cushion at the Sunnyside Grand Cinema with a big ole' bucket of popcorn awaiting the arrival of the Sorcerer Supreme. I've been a huge fan of the Steve Ditko character since his inception and the thought of finally seeing the cloaked one on the big screen boggles my mind.

Pacific Northwest Native To Helm Brand New Star Trek TV Series [VIDEO]

I'm a big Star Trek fan, even over Star Wars. I remember being a young kid and along with my brothers and sisters we would play Star Trek all the time. We'd arrange the furniture in the front room and we were lucky that we had a large front room window that substituted as our Enterprise view screen.

I'd place my Dad's recliner as my Captain's chair in the center of the room with my brother and sister using the old giant record console as their navigation. The best part is when we "beamed" down to the planet, it was outside

Lessons I’ve Learned From Store Closings — Hastings Edition

Hastings, the entertainment superstore, will be closing their doors forever by Oct. 31 in the Tri-Cities. It's a sad situation, but brick and mortar stores seem to be struggling these days, especially ones catering to the entertainment business.

I liked Hastings and I loved that they expanded over the years to include comic books, clothing and collectible pop-culture items. I loved that I could touch and feel everything before I bought it, but those days seem to be coming to an end ... and sadly, it makes sense.
