One thing about growing up in Yakima is you know what real Mexican food is -- and isn't.

I'll tell you what it's not. It's not when your taco is in a crunchy shell with ground beef, lettuce and tomatoes. It's delicious, but that's not the taco I grew up with.

You don't have to go far to get great, authentic Mexican food in town. Here are my top five favorite places, in no particular order.

    Mercedes and Family

5607 Tieton Dr #106 in Yakima

    Favorite Dish: Chile Rellenos

I love this place for several reasons. Burritos as large as your arm, the tacos are legit and the salsa is made fresh in-house. I love their tamales, too. Often I'll order a dozen with my order so I can take them home and have homemade tamales whenever I need.

    Antojitos Mexicano Restaurant

    3512 Summitview Ave

    Favorite Dish: Carne Asada

This is one that took me a while to finally visit after numerous requests from others to check it out and, after I did, I had to wonder what took me to long. Fast service, great food -- completely awesome experience.

    Los Hernandez Tamales

3706 Main St. in Union Gap

Favorite Dish: Asparagus and Cheese Tamales

Many people who have been here say they have the best tamales in the world, and I might have to agree. Though it doesn't look like much from the outside, just a concrete little building on South First Street (very south) but they do have, quite possibly, the best tamales you'll ever have in your life. All local ingredients and made fresh.

    Taqueria el Rinconsito

1101 S. Third Ave. and 1001 N. First St. in Yakima

    Favorite Dish: Pollo Asado

The first time I stepped foot inside this place, I was amazed at the awesome-looking menu. It was all animated, I've never seen that before. They have a huge menu from traditional favorites like menudo and even have churros. The prices are great, too.

    Xochimilco Mexican Restaurant

2304 W. Nob Hill Blvd. and in Glenwood Square on 52nd and Tieton in Yakima

    Favorite Dish: Chicken Mole

From what I understand, the name comes from a specific place in Mexico known for their mole. That's good news for me because I can't get enough of it! They also have awesome drinks. Don't bother trying to pronounce the name and don't worry if you can't, just make your way over sometime and check it out.
