State Routes 24 and 241 will remain closed until Monday morning as crews battle a fast-moving brush fire that started Saturday on the Yakima Training Center and spread overnight through the East Valley and into Benton County.

Rattlesnake Ridge residents, many of whom had been advised to evacuate Saturday night, dodged disaster as the fire grew to an estimated 25,000 acres but passed the area by. The fire created smoky conditions over the East Valley and forced the closure of State Route 24 from Milepost 8 near Beane Road to the junction of State Route 241, the state Department of Transportation reported.

No evacuation orders were posted as of Sunday, and WSDOT will re-evaluate conditions Monday morning before determining whether the roads are safe for travel.

According to the Yakima Herald-Republic, as many as 50 homes between State Route 241 and North Outlook Road had been threatened by the wind-driven flames.
