On tonight’s episode (March 28) of ‘American Idol,’ the hopefuls were allowed to perform songs by their personal idols. Deandre Brackensick chose R&B singer Eric Benet’s sensitive tune ‘Sometimes I Cry.’ Benet, astute pop culture watchers will recall, is the ex-husband of Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, who famously admitted to cheating on her. It was a tabloid scandal, so we hope Brackensick admires Benet’s professional life only.

At the suggestion of episode mentor Stevie Nicks, Brackensick slowed things down and he sang the song in a lush, rich falsetto the entire time. He sounded like Prince, reminding us of those moments when the Purple One reaches for the stars with his throat.

It was easily Brackensick’s finest performance of the season thus far, with Jennifer Lopez prodding — no, make that begging — the show’s viewers to pick up their phones and vote for Brackensick so that she can continue to hear the curly-cued singer’s voice again for weeks to come.

It was a pretty performance that should spark water cooler conversation tomorrow.
