Demi Lovato is getting ready to open up about her struggles and battles with being a role model to young girls in a new special MTV documentary, appropriately titled, ‘Stay Strong.’

In the heart-wrenching interview, the former Disney star and now mega hit pop star talks about her eating disorder, depression and admits to even cutting herself at times.

“I was most definitely nervous about opening up to the cameras,” she tells MTV in an interview leading up to the airing of the special, set for next week. “I was very hesitant to say certain things, but once I was around them for a while, I felt more comfortable and really opened up towards them.

“I speak about a lot of serious issues, and I really hope to get awareness out there about the issues that I dealt with,” Lovato continues. “But at the end of the day, I just want people to see what it’s like to be in my shoes. I kind of talked about the journey that I’ve been on, and I just want people to take away a positive message. It gets better, you know?”

Lovato and the cameras also make the trip back to the Illinois treatment center where she received help, to talk to the existing patience about what is on the other side for them as well. Lovato made the visit back a few months ago, which she called an “inspiring day.”

The singer/actress says she hopes the special will help those who need to seek their own treatment and allow them to know they are not alone in life with their battles. “It’s to really inspire people,” she says of the documentary. “That’s all I hope to accomplish [with this special]. If there is a young girl at home dealing with the same issues that I’m dealing with, I want to be able to reach out to her and tell her that it’s going to be OK.”

‘Demi Lovato: Stay Strong’ will make its premiere on Tuesday, March 6 at 10:00PM ET on MTV.
