Washington State Patrol aren't just looking for people driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, they're also keeping our roads safe by stopping drowsy drivers. In fact, it's not only ill-advised to drive drowsy, it's also illegal.

100,000 crashes, 40,000 injuries and even 1,550 fatalities happen every year. Washington State alone has had 64 fatal crashes between 2011 through 2015, and even more injury collisions.

“Drowsy driving is as dangerous as getting behind the wheel while under the influence,” said Chief John Batiste, Washington State Patrol. “A simple awareness by drivers can prevent them from getting behind the wheel tired and taking a life.”

If you're caught drowsy driving you could get a Negligent Driving ticket that'll cost you $550 and may even include classes that you'll have to pay out of pocket for. The same types of classes drunk drivers have to take as well.

Stay informed by checking out the Drowsy Driving website. It lists ways to avoid driving drowsy that common sense could tell you like getting a good night's sleep before a long road trip and to make sure you make plenty of stops when traveling over 100 miles. But if it means not getting that stiff ticket, I'm all for awareness.
