Elisabeth Moss has become a skillful indie actress since her stint on AMC’s Mad Men, taking on films like Listen Up Philip, High-Rise, and Queen of Earth. We’ll have to wait for the second season of Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake to see her on our TV screens again, but the trailer for her new Sundance drama The Free World should tide us over until then.

The Free World stars Boyd Holbrook (Narcos, Gone Girl) as Mo, an ex-con fresh out of prison who works at an animal shelter. One night he finds Doris (Moss) crouched on the floor of the shelter after she may or may not have killed her police officer husband. As the murder is being investigated and the police are searching for Doris, the two go on the run from the law to save themselves.

The film also stars Octavia Spencer as Mo’s friend Linda Workman and Sun Kang as Detective Shin, who is investigating the murder case. This will be the directorial debut of Restless screenwriter Jason Lew, who also wrote the script for this film.

The Free World is out in theaters on September 23.
