Over the weekend, I learned the hard way that if my daughter plays games on our Wii U under my account, it could lock you out of the online features of your system. Here's what happened to me and how to fix it so it won't happen to you.

I had a download voucher to download a new game for Wii U. The system booted up as normal, but it wasn't letting me access the online store. It kept giving me an Error Code: 102-2802. I figured it my internet connection or something but, after calling Nintendo support it turns out it was an issue with COPPA - Child Online Privacy Protection Act.

As it turns out, you can't be under the age of 13 and use online services. In the game Super Mario 3D World after you successfully complete a level you can leave a message, if you'd like. My daughter told me that in some of the messages she would apologize for her drawing by saying she was 10. Nintendo saw this and shut me down.

I applied to get my online services back but they suggested that children under 13 can have their own account and makes it so it doesn't allow them to use the online features as listed in the COPPA act for their own protection.

Now I know and, hopefully, now you know as well.
