Neither HBO nor Jon Stewart have been particularly forthcoming with the ex-Daily Show host’s new shortform content, previously eyed for a return around the 2016 elections. Now, however, HBO reveals that Stewart’s new project is that of an animated cable news parody in the vein of The Onion, potentially due out as early as September or October.

Speaking at the ongoing TCA press tour panel, HBO boss Casey Bloys described the as-yet-untitled series as a “parody of a cable news network,” with an aim to premiere sometime before the November elections, either September or October. Stewart will lend his literal and figurative voice, as Bloys says:

He is establishing an animation studio. He wants to get material out on a daily basis. The idea is that it’s an animated parody of a cable news network in an Onion-like portal. It will be his voice, in his actual voice, and his tone.

Stewart’s four-year deal will see him producing short-form digital content to be showcased on HBO Now, HBO Go and various other platforms, with the aid of cloud graphics company OTOY Inc. Bloys also stated that the simple animation technology would ennable Stewart to “respond to things very quickly.”

We’ll surely hear more formal details before long, but will Stewart’s new series feel like a worthy successor to The Daily Show?
