Over the weekend I was driving a company car when I popped a tire. My first thought wasn't 'what did I hit?' but more 'how do I explain this without getting fired.'

What happened was I drove to Longview, Washington this past weekend as my friend organizes an annual charity event for their local children's facility. It's a video game themed event so he knew I'd be interesting in helping as I do every year.

We didn't have any problems on the way or even when we arrived. It was after we were leaving from that day after arriving that someone rushed out and said our tire was not only flat, it was very flat. Rims touching the ground flat.

Jacking up the car to swap out the flat tire for the full-sized spare we learn there was a huge split in the tire, itself. It's beyond repair. The photo above is the actual picture of the tire.

While this is all happening, I know I need to tell my immediate supervisor, but not sure how. I thought of texting him a photo or sending an email but, instead, I wanted to tell him to his face. Using the photo above, I handed him my phone Monday morning and he's, fortunately, not surprised as those tires have been on that vehicle for far longer than they should have been.

All in all, if you have to tell your boss something, I'd say tell it to their face. Emails and texts don't show emotions or sarcasm. That'll also give you sometime to stop thinking of ways to bring it up and just come clean with it all at once.
