‘Jem and the Holograms’ Is Getting a New Movie From One Very Weird Team

Jem and the Holograms

Of all the potential movie directors Jon M. Chu and producer Jason Blum could collaborate on, a live-action update on ‘Jem and the Holograms‘ is literally the last thing we would have expected. The director of ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ and the producer of the ‘Paranormal Activity’ series are teaming up to adapt the ’80s cartoon series/toy line for the modern age, and we couldn’t be more baffled if we tried.

But wait! It gets weirder! Also involved as a producer is Scooter Braun, Justin Bieber’s manager! And this odd trio took to YouTube to ask fans for their help in designing costumes, casting and writing music. Um … what?

For those who weren’t alive in the ’80s (or have chosen to forget them altogether), ‘Jem and the Holograms’ was about a girl with a secret identity as a rock star. So, it was pretty much ‘Hannah Montana’ with bigger hair and synthesizers. Chu’s involvement in this kind of project makes sense when you remember that he got his start directing entires of the ‘Step Up’ series and two Justin Bieber documentaries, but Blum’s involvement is just plain weird.

Here’s the synopsis of the new film, borrowed from The Hollywood Reporter:

“…centers on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt — one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.”

‘Jem and the Holograms’ is being fast tracked for a spring start date. Yeah, we’re not sure why this is happening either.
