American Idol‘s series mentor and Interscope Records chief chose the Jackson 5′s ‘I’ll Be There’ for diva Jessica Sanchez on tonight’s (May 16) episode. It was her final performance for the viewing audience’s votes. It was like her second time singing Mariah Carey tonight, since Carey’s cover of this particular song was a huge hit for her.

We heard a bit of a soulful tone during this rendition that we’ve not previously experienced with Sanchez before. The song cycled through a few tempos, and it showcased her ability to go up and down and to play with dynamics. Her tone was so perfect that she did remind us of Michael Jackson. And no, that’s not easy to do.

We don’t mean to sound like haters, but it was another “too good” perf by Sanchez. She earns high marks for her vocals, her ability to slay big note, her technical proficiency  and the quality of her voice. But it’s a little boring. We want the flaws.

Randy Jackson concurred. He felt the song lacked “a moment” and the “OH. MY. GOD” factor, which the studio audience disagreed with by hurling boos. Were siding with Randy on this one, folks. It was terrific but it was also a bit of a snooze. Nothing out of the box here.
