Justin Bieber recently got the face of Christ tattooed on the back of his calf and thanked his savior during his VMAs speech last August. Despite the fact that The Biebs is an out and proud Christian, the teen sensation isn’t spending every Sunday in church.

In fact, Bieber is more interested in a personal relationship with God and Jesus and maintains it through prayer, as opposed to sitting in a church pew each week. We guess you could call The Biebs a modern, reformist Christian!

In his V Magazine feature (courtesy of The New York Post), The Biebs offered his commentary on people who follow the “letter of the law” as opposed to the “spirit of the law.” That is, those who are more focused on attending church and making a show of it than doing good works and emulating God in their everyday lives. “A lot of people who are religious, I think they get lost. They go to church just to go to church,” the ‘Baby’ singer said. “I’m not trying to disrespect them … But for me, I focus more on praying and talking to Him. I don’t have to go to church.”

The Biebs also likens himself to a prize fighter in his chat with the fashion mag for its music issue, saying, “Now that I’m on top, everyone wants to bring me down … Everyone’s trying to tug at me and take my spot. Like Floyd Mayweather, he’s the best boxer in the world. Now he is a champion. Every time he goes to a fight now, people are like, ‘He’s going to lose this time.’”

Thanks to that comment, an image of Bieber in boxing trunks with gloves on, throwing haymakers left and right popped into our head. The good thing about all those people trying to knock The Biebs out means that he has motivation to keep on keeping on. Plus, he’s got Jesus in his corner and all.
