Justin Timberlake Talks Up New MySpace Format
Justin Timberlake is an investor in the flailing, former social media giant known as MySpace. Yes, MySpace still exists, although we wouldn’t say it’s going strong! He and the the new owners recently unveiled the site’s redesign, which looks strikingly similar to Pinterest. While MySpace has fallen from its former digital glory, Timberlake is part of a team that hopes to restore the platform to prominence.
Timberlake acknowledged that his generation of artists is required to use social media, and that’s why the site will primarily exist for artists, both established and emerging. Once it gets its artist legs under it, MySpace will then look to more actively recruit music fans. “I come from that, no question,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “But with every obstacle comes an opportunity and I see this, as it speaks to somebody like me, as bridging the gap. It’s just bringing the connection that much closer while still making the artist feel comfortable that they can make their art, lock themselves in a room and torture themselves as they do, and still find a way to comfortably connect with their fan base.”
Given his level of fame, JT will be the ambassador for the site, working with his music industry friends to get them to join and actively use the new-look MySpace. He wouldn’t reveal which acts he’d be targeting, but something tells us the artists he works with directly will be atop the list. He wants some of his recording pals to be anonymous beta testers so that they can comfortably be a part of the relaunch.
