We, in the Riggs house, have a simple trick-or-treating logic. We don't knock on people's houses unless their porch light is on. We might if their light is off, but they have the spirit of Halloween -- including jack o' lanterns and Halloween decorations -- and we can clearly see someone is home. If not, we casually move on.

These kids tried knocking on the door a couple of times as they were waiting for someone to answer. Can you see why nobody was home?

As we were walking through this neighborhood, my kids did start walking up to the door. That's when I used my Sherlock skills to see there was a "for sale" sign and told my girls that the house was for sale and the porch light was probably on a timer. They shrugged it off and moved along.

It wasn't until we were on our way back that we saw these kids from a distance. They knocked, waited, rang the door bell, waited again -- no response.

That's when my daughter yelled out, "That house is for sale!" They saw the sign, chuckled and moved on to the next house.

A funny moment that I hope those kids look back on as they tell their friends about this for years to come.
