With the popularity of Netflix’s Making a Murderer and NPR’s Serial, the true crime genre has never been bigger. Yesterday, Variety announced that actor and screenwriter Michael Sheen would be throwing his hat into the ring with Green River Killer, an adaptation of the infamous 20-year investigation into a series of murders in the state of Washington.

According to Variety, the film will follow the decades-long game of cat-and-mouse between Detective Tom Jensen and Gary Ridgway, the serial killer responsible for upwards of 40 deaths during the 1980s and 1990s. Sheen himself adapted the screenplay — which was was named to the 2015 Black List — from a Dark Horse Entertainment graphic novel written by one of the detective’s sons. Not impressive enough? Sheen will also be playing the titular killer in the film, which marks the actor’s directorial debut.

For fans of true crime cinema, Green River Killer could not come at a better time; what better to tide us over until Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio make good on their promises to adapt Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City? And if you’re a Fannibal who has been missing your favorite television show about serial killers, never fear: The Green River Killer was one of the main inspirations behind the dramatic Hannibal Lector storyline in Silence of the Lambs. Ted Bundy, himself on death row for a series of murders in the 1970s, wrote to the lead detective on the Green River case and offered his help in creating a profile for the killer. Here’s looking forward to the prison scene between Tom Jensen and whatever dazzling character actor Sheen brings in to play Bundy.
