If you lived in the Northwest in 1980, you may remember how scary the Mount St. Helens eruption was. Smoke and ash were carried literally around the world. It was a devastating and amazing thing to witness. So when earthquakes of any magnitude happen in the area, we tend to get a little jumpy around these parts.

Early Wednesday morning (Jan 3), several small earthquakes shook the town of Morton, which is near Mount St. Helens. The largest quake registered at 3.9 on the Richter Scale. There are little shakes around the area from time to time, but not usually as high as 3.9.

Luckily, no one was hurt and no major damage was reported. Scientists don't think that the magma under Mount St. Helens causeed the quakes, but they say more quakes are possible for 48 hours after the first quake. It doesn't look like another eruption is even close to happening, but let's hope they keep an eye on the situation just in case!
