One of my biggest pet peeves is when people don't put their shopping carts back. At least put them in the convenient stalls which is what they're used for, but to lazily leave them in the parking lot is downright tacky. Here's a few tips so you don't have to be in that awkward situation where you really, really want to just leave it there without taking it back.

  • Park Next to a Cart Return

That way you don't have to go too far to put it back.

  • Don't Put your Kid in the Car First

Your natural instinct is to put your kid in the car, then your groceries. Once that happens, you don't want to just leave your kid in the car by themselves. Once you put your groceries in the car, bring them kid back with you to the cart return, then walk back together.

  • Don't Use a Shopping Cart

Simple enough, if you can't put it away, don't take it out in the first place. Use a hand basket or, what I've gotten in the habit of doing, don't use anything. Just buy only what you can carry. You don't have to put it back if you never took one out to begin with.

  • Time It Just Right to Pass Onto an Employee

I don't advise this too often, but if you happen to see an employee, pass it off onto them and they'll be happy to bring it back to the store for you. In fact, they'll probably appreciate you offering that than to have you just leave the cart in the parking lot.

  • Ask for Help Out

The other easy way is when they ask, "would you like help out?", accept their generous offer. I mean, after all, it's free and they'll bring the cart back to the store for you.
