Prince Covers V Magazine, Talks Past + Present, Vinyl + iPhones

Prince rarely gives interviews, so when he covered the new, fall preview issue of V, with a tightly spun afro and his massive, liquid-like eyes, it was a big deal. Make that huge.

The singer, who famously eschews technology like iTunes and YouTube, which are vehicles that turn people into stars nowadays, talked about vinyl (the past) and iPhones (the present) in the piece.

It’s obvious that he doesn’t like to communicate via millennial-approved means.

His Purpleness, looking a bit like guitar deity Jimi Hendrix on his cover, doesn’t think that vinyl is making a comeback, since, in his mind, “it never left. Think about a young person listening to Joni Mitchell for the first time on vinyl. You know how fun that is? Whoa, we gonna be here a minute.”

He also said “hell, no” when asked if he owns an iPhone. (For the record, we wouldn’t have asked, since it seems to be a foregone conclusion at this point!) He mimicked people addicted to their mobiles, saying, “Where is my phone? Can you call my phone? Oh, I can’t find it.”

He also explained why his shows are sacred, almost a religious experience for the fan and attendee, saying, “People come to see us 50 times. Well, that’s not just going to see a concert — that’s some other mess going on. This music changes you. These people are not being satisfied elsewhere by musicians, you feel what I’m saying? It’s no disrespect to anyone else, because we’re not checking for them. But we don’t lip synch. We ain’t got time for it. Ain’t no tape up there.”

Prince — nothin’ but the real thing.
