For 10 years, plans and rumors have swirled around a biopic about Queen's iconic frontman Freddie Mercury. Originally, Sacha Baren Cohen was slated to portray the singer. But in on their website last Friday, the band announced that Mr. Robot star Rami Malek would take on the legendary role.

"Rami Malek has signed up to take on the challenging rôle of Freddie Mercury. Who could imagine a more perfect fit than this brilliant actor ? At this stage you probably know him best for TV’s Mr Robot. Roger and Brian told QOL: 'Rami has great presence and he’s utterly dedicated to the project. He’s completely living and breathing Freddie already, which is wonderful.'"

Pre-production for the film will begin this week in London. Bryan Singer will direct the project, having gained noteriety for The Ususal Suspects and his X-Men films. The band gushed that Singer has "extraordinary imagination and style," and will be perfect to lead the helm.

If you're wondering who will play the remaining members of the band, well, they have an answer for that, too — "That, friends, is news for another day."
