There are many who complain about growing up in Yakima and would rather live in a bigger city like Seattle. I'm here to say that it looks good on paper, but it's not as great as you'd think. Here are some reasons why growing up in Yakima is better than growing up in Seattle.

  • Know your Produce

Growing up in Yakima makes you well aware what fresh produce is supposed to look like and taste like. I've seen apples outside of Washington and think to myself "those don't look like the same apples I grew up with." There are even places you can pick your own fruit -- how fun!

  • Short Commute to Anywhere

If you get a call from your school, it won't take you more than a moment to travel there to grab your child. If your kid injures themselves, it's a quick trip to a hospital. I couldn't imagine living anywhere where you were separated from your kids that far away, just in case.

  • Parks. Lots of them.

Sure, Seattle has a few parks, too, but in Yakima just about anyone is within walking distance to one of the many parks in Yakima.

  • Outdoor activities aren't far away

If you love taking your kids camping, fishing or on other outdoor activities, they're not far away at all. Easy to accommodate.

  • Knowing the Seasons

In Yakima if we get snow we get a delay and, on rare occasions, we'll have a snow day. It doesn't snow nearly as much on that side of the state and, when it does, they have to shut down the city. I couldn't imaging our kids going through that.
