‘Sesame Street’ Movie Gets Moving Again With ‘Night at the Museum 3’ Writers

HBO Sesame Street Premiere Details

Following a major relocation from PBS to HBO, Sesame Street is plotting another big move: This time to a theater near you. Warner Bros. is developing a feature-length, live-action film based on the venerable children’s educational series. Sure, it’s an easy mark for a typical nostalgia cash-in, but it’s also hard to complain about a Sesame Street movie given everything that the series stands for — and in the wake of our recent election, we could probably use a few sunny days.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has teamed with Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps banner to develop a live-action Sesame Street movie, and they’ve hired screenwriters David Guion and Michael Handelman to take a crack at the script. The biggest issue, of course, is figuring out how to translate over 40 years of the prolific children’s show — which has featured myriad plots and characters (both puppet and human) — into one feature-length narrative. In our post-LEGO Movie world, the answer seems obvious: Hire Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Kidding, but seriously, maybe a somewhat meta-approach would be useful here.

It’s not the first time that Levy has attempted to take Sesame Street to the big screen: Back in 2012, the director and producer teamed up with Fox for a film based on the classic series. After the show moved to HBO, however, it seems as though his plans hit a bit of a snag.

Guion and Handelman are no strangers to working with Levy, having previously wrote the screenplay for Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Their credits also include Dinner for Schmucks, the 2010 comedy directed by Jay Roach and starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. The pair are also behind the Will Ferrell Shakespearean comedy, first announced back in 2014; that film is reportedly titled The Understudy and stars Ferrell as the world’s greatest Shakespearean actor, forced to contend with an understudy who may be trying to kill him.
