Should Teachers Be Allowed to Strike? — Survey of the Day

Chicago is in the midst of teacher strike that is affecting roughly 350,000 students.
There is some debate over whether the strike is permitted under Illinois law since the unions’ list of grievances extends beyond pay and benefits — which are the only issues they have the legal right to strike over.
But, regardless of that technicality, there is a school of thought that teachers shouldn’t be allowed to strike under any circumstances because of the massive disruption it causes to parents, many of whom have to negotiate child care for their young children when there is no school to send them to.
According to a new survey from Rasmussen Reports of 1,000 adults, 42 percent believe it should be illegal for public school teachers to strike. Forty-six percent don’t think teachers should be banned from using the strike as a negotiating tactic and 11 percent are unsure of where the stand on the issue.
