‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie Is Coming to the Big Screen as Possible Franchise

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie

‘Sonic the Hedgehog,’ the popular Sega video game protagonist, is going to be making the leap (perhaps with the help of the A button) to the big screen as Sony and Original Film are teaming with Sega to turn the character into a franchise mainstay, with films due out every year.

Sony Pictures made the announcement that Upright Citizen’s Brigade alums Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are writing the script, and that the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie is going to be a live-action/CG hybrid, with animation provided by Marza Animation Group (which is owned by Sega). Alas, most of the other info provided plays up the fact that ‘Sonic’ is a billion dollar video game franchise and everyone is happy to be working with everyone else on this project. Columbia Pictures President of Production Hannah Minghella stated:

There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.

On one hand, video game movies have been getting a lot of heat as there’s a whole slew on the horizon with talented people attached (like ‘Metal Gear Solid,‘ ‘Assassin’s Creed‘ and Splinter Cell’), on the other hand, the film versions of ‘Super Mario Brothers,’ ‘Tomb Raider,’ ‘Hitman’ and ‘Max Payne’ suggest that no one other than Paul W.S. Anderson has cracked how to make these films. We suspect it’s going to take some time for this to hit the big screen, so don’t expected to see a ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ film before 2016.
