‘The Good Dinosaur’ Pushed to 2015, Leaving Next Year Without a Pixar Movie

Shortly after Pixar revealed the first footage, art designs and additional casting for ‘The Good Dinosaur‘ at D23 Expo 2013, director Bob Peterson was pulled from his position. According to the studio, the film still needs more production time and has, therefore, been moved to a later release date in 2015 — but that leaves next year without a feature.

‘The Good Dinosaur,’ originally slated to open May 30, 2014, has now been moved to November 25, 2015. ‘Finding Dory,’ first set for that same November date, will now open in summer 2016.

Said Pixar President Ed Catmull of the decision (via LA Times), ”Nobody ever remembers the fact that you slipped a film, but they will remember a bad film. Our conclusion was that we were going to give the [dinosaur] film some more time.”

Pixar has released a feature-length film every year since 2006′s ‘Cars,’ and now 2014 will mark the first year since without one, and it all seemed to start with Peterson. After certain creative decisions were not being made, he was removed from the director’s seat, forcing Pixar Chief Creative Office John Lasseter, ‘Toy Story 3′ director Lee Unkrich, ‘Brave’ director Mark Andrews and ‘The Good Dinosaur’ co-director Peter Sohn to pick up the slack. The position is still unfilled.

‘The Good Dinosaur’ stars Lucas Neff, John Lithgow, Frances McDormand, Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris and Judy Greer, and imagines what would’ve happened if the asteroid that caused the dinosaurs’ extinction had never hit Earth. The next upcoming Pixar movie is ‘Inside Out,’ coming June 19, 2015, making that year the first to include two Pixar feature films.
