In an interview not long ago, Michael Fassbender promised that the Assassin’s Creed movie would feature some practical stunts, which seemed a bit hard to believe given the increasingly CGI-driven nature of film — not to mention how crazy dangerous it would be to pull off some of the physical tricks depicted in the video game series. But it looks like director Justin Kurzel is delivering on that promise, as evidenced by this awesome behind-the-scenes video, in which a stuntman takes a 125-foot “leap of faith.” 125 feet. That’s beyond impressive.

The new video features Fassbender’s stuntman Damien Walters taking leaps from increasingly lofty heights, ultimately culminating in a 125-foot drop. It’s one of the highest falls taken by a stuntman in over 35 years, which makes it all the more incredible to watch. Sure, they’ll have to use CGI to integrate the jump into the film itself, but the fact that they’re using a practical stunt at all should lend some realism to these particular sequences.

And really, they could have just used CGI for the whole thing, but it’s great that Kurzel thought of this. Digital effects should be used to enhance the practical, not replace it entirely.

We still have a few months before Assassin’s Creed hits theaters, and while video game movies understandably inspire a healthy amount of skepticism, I’m still optimistic that Kurzel may very well deliver the first genuinely good one.

Assassin’s Creed also stars Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson, and hits theaters on December 21.
