Yakima Bears Open 23rd Season In Yakima Tonight In First Place

The Yakima Bears defeated the Eugene Emeralds 10-1 Tuesday night at PK Park in Eugene, Oregon. The Emeralds still took the five-game series 3-2, but the Bears also stayed tied for first in the Northwest League’s East Division with a 2-3 record.
The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Yogey Perez-Ramos reached on a two-base error by the pitcher, Josh Parr hit a single and stole second, then Shaun Cooper hit an RBI groundout and Jimmy Comerota hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the runs.
A mess led to five Bears runs in the third inning. Four singles, three errors, a walk and a stolen added up to the five runs.

The Bears added a run without the help of errors in the sixth inning. With one out, Parr was hit by a pitch and then advanced to score on singles by Cooper and Kerry Jenkins.
Yakima struck again in the ninth inning with two more runs. Kerry Jenkins was hit by a pitch and Jacob House doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Jae Yun Kim advanced both runners with a sacrifice fly and House scored later on a wild pitch.
While the offense was piling on runs, the pitching staff kept the Emeralds in check. In his first professional start Daniel Watts tossed three shutout innings with two strikeouts. Blake Forslund came in behind Watts and, in his first professional appearance, retired all six batters he faced, including three on strikeouts. Bobby O’Neill allowed three base runners, but tossed shutout ball for two innings. Jose Jose finished the game, allowing one run on one hit in two innings.

In the end, the Bears committed one error behind their pitching staff, while the Emeralds booted the ball five times.

Kerry Jenkins broke his early season slump by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Shaun Cooper extended his hit streak to four games after going 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base.

The Bears start a five-game homestand against Salem-Keizer at Yakima County Stadium Wednesday night. Free magnet schedules will be given to the first 500 fans as they enter before the 7:05 first pitch and fireworks will follow the game. Right-handed returning pitcher Alex Capaul is scheduled to start against right-handed pitcher Lorenzo Mendoza of the Volcanoes.
