We've all been there, right? Still in high school or fresh out of graduation and you're looking for a job to earn your own money. Yakima has plenty of businesses and several of them employ many people so certainly they can make room for me, too, right? Well, in these instances, they didn't and look where they are now -- no longer in businesses.

Here are some places that didn't hire me and, coincidentally, they're no longer in business.

Blockbuster Video
Video stores was a great job to have in the 90s. You work with stuff you love like, in my case, movies and video games, and part of the fringe benefit is being able to rent them for free. Blockbuster comes to mind as it's a place I had applied for more than once on a couple of different occasions. Odd, too, because I'd see other new employees come and go, but I'm loyal and would've stuck it out for the long haul. Oh well. They're gone.

Montgomery Ward
Another store I'd frequent mostly because it was so close to where I grew up. I would've loved to work in the electronics section since that's familiar territory for me. The problem is I was never hired by these guys. I did get as far as an interview where they asked me a bunch of stupid questions like 'Would you rather play baseball or run a marathon?' I chose poorly (I picked marathon) where the right answer was baseball because it's a team effort. How was I supposed to know that? Oh well. They're gone.

Crazy Mike's Video
Another video store. This was actually my favorite video store in Yakima. This place didn't have applications, you actually had to submit a resume. Now, granted, I never submitted a resume to work here, but they should've employeed me for being a valued customer and knowing where stuff was better than some of the staff. Gone, but not forgotten. Oh well. They're gone.

Software Ect.
Out of all places in Yakima where I'd be a perfect fit, you'd think they would've gone so far as to fire someone just to make room for me. As it turns out, they didn't. I was friendly with the staff as they'd see me often looking for new video games at the Yakima Mall. Talking to them a little more, it turns out the job was more sales oriented (who knew?) than just having a passion for video games. In fact, the manager at the time admitted he never played video games, he just sells them. A true manager, right there. He was still cool and was bummed I never worked here in the 90s. Since then Software Ect. has become Game Stop so, in their defense, they're not gone, just merged and relocated but as far as Software Ect. goes, yeah, they're gone.

Kay Bee Toys 'n Hobby
Of course I also applied for jobs at our old Yakima Mall. Kay Bee was a wonderful place full of toys and video games and I would've been all for it. I had a friend who worked there and seemed to like it alright. Alas, I never got a call back on my application. Oh well. They're gone. In fact, the entire mall is now gone so there's that.

There are also a slew of businesses that are still in business who didn't hire me, but it looks like they didn't need me after all. I'm cool with it. I've had other jobs along the way, but those stand out as places that didn't hire me when they had the chance.

What about you? Who didn't hire you? Tell us in the comments.
