I don't know when it started, but there's always been nasty rumors that some Chinese restaurants in America were serving cat meat in the "chicken" fried rice. I remember my father telling me that as a kid, and it always made me petrified to order it from the menu.

Fortunately, as an adult, I realize how harmful this negative sterotype is, and I can scowl when I hear people make mean-spirited jokes about a particular local Chinese restaurant in Yakima (that shall remain nameless) which was accused of serving cat meat.

Perhaps back in the 70's and 80's a few restaurants in America were busted trying to pass off cats as chicken meat, but it doesn't happen anymore, despite bogus stories you might see on the internet!

Suffice it to say, cat meat and dog meat is sold to restauranteurs on the black market in some Asian countries, such as China. In the country of Taiwan, it is already illegal for chefs to serve cats and dogs, but now they are jailing and fining people just for eating them.

I find it fascinating how we humans pick and choose which animals are okay to eat. I, for one, sure am glad to be a human being and not on the animal food chain!
