It’s almost Cannes Film Festival time, and in addition to the highly classy and extremely prestigious films vying for prizes at the festival there’s also what’s called the Cannes Market, where completed movies as well as packages of movies that are ready to be made are brought to be sold to audiences around the world. A press release in my inbox describes one such intriguing concept: A new version of the Sylvester Stallone action hit Cliffhanger, this time with an actress playing the rock-climbing hero:

The female-led reboot of the 1993 classic will be directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, the cinematic mastermind behind the visionary films A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and The Bad Batch and based on a script by Sascha Penn (Creed II, upcoming Blacklist script C1:34). Casting is currently underway for a female lead to headline an ensemble cast, with Jason Momoa (Aquaman, “Game of Thrones”) in talks for a cameo.

Momoa appeared in Amirpour’s previous film, The Bad Batch. The only cameo that really makes sense here for him (assuming the remake is like the original) would be playing the person who (uh, spoiler alert) dies in a climbing accident in the film’s opening scene. That event haunts the film’s hero (Stallone in the original) and becomes part of his motivation throughout the rest of the film, when a group of baddies show up and force the climbing experts to help them recover some stolen money that’s wound up on this remote peak. (The leader of the villains in the original is an excellently demented John Lithgow.)

Remake Daylight next! Anyone remember Daylight? Just me. Yeah, just me.
