Jhene Aiko wants young people to express themselves through writing, and she's helping them by starting her own campaign called Penny's Pen.

Teaming up with the nonprofit organization Get Schooled, Jhene is asking young people ages 13-21 to share their written pieces on Instagram or on the site GetSchooled.com. Top submission will be eligible to win a Penny's Pen writing kit and everyone who enters will get a special Jhene Aiko sticker.

In a press statement, the Trip creator talked about what writing has meant to her throughout life.

“Writing poetry has always been a form of therapy for me and has helped me get through difficult situations,” said Aiko. “When no one else understands, our journals can understand.”

Marie Groark, the executive director of Get Schooled explained why the Twenty88 member is the perfect person to work on the initiative.

“Jhene has a powerful vision to inspire young people to understand the power of their pen," said Groark. "She understands that when young people can use their writing to express who they are and what they have experienced, they can become better advocates for themselves and their communities. Get Schooled is excited to partner with Jhene in the fulfillment of this vision.”

The campaign started on Thursday (Oct. 19) and will run until Oct. 27.
