Even as Showtime’s Twin Peaks left more maddeningly unresolved than the original series, fans have more or less accepted the unlikelihood of another season. That said, creator David Lynch won’t rule one out, even if “it took me four and a half years to write and record this [one].”

Twin Peaks’ lengthy production and advanced age of its stars made portions of The Return feel like a memorial, even for the ones who didn’t physically appear. That was especially true of music icon and Peaks alum David Bowie, who apparently allowed his likeness to be used for one final appearance.

Showtime’s Twin Peaks may not have offered the ratings smash network heads hoped, but its online presence has given the mystery drama a major boost. Now, ahead of Sunday’s fifth episode premiere, new Twin Peaks is coming back in style with the first two episodes streaming free.

Still, don’t expect the 2017 revival to undergo any graphic overhaul, as Showtime bosses reveal David Lynch is “taking advantage of cable freedoms,” but “David’s pretty clean.”

Twin Peaks has lost yet another of its returning Showtime cast, as star and co-creator Mark Frost’s father Warren is no longer with us. The Twin Peaks coroner and sometime Seinfeld star has passed away at age 91.

The way Twin Peaks promotion has gone so far, neither Showtime nor David Lynch are likely to give up too many details (or footage) before the May premiere. That said, a few new teasers of Showtime’s revival catch us up to speed on the major bookending events of the series, to say nothing of a controversial film and some fine coffee.

Twin Peaks fans finally had their prayers answers with word that not one, but as many as four new episodes would premiere on May 21, to say nothing of the confirmed 18-episode order. Now, Showtime and David Lynch address if said 18 will prove the last of Twin Peaks, when we might expect a trailer, and what role the prequel Fire Walk With Me might play.

It remains to be seen if Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival will answer any of the myriad mysteries left over by the initial run two decades ago, but first things first: we have to remember what those mysteries are. Thankfully, Showtime will help us out in December, streaming the full two seasons to subscribers ahead of the 2017 return.
