10 Traditional Skills that are Dying Out
Thank God my mother put me in Boy Scouts, because that's where I learned a bunch of traditional skills that are fading away in the digital age.
According to a report in the U.K.'s Daily Mail, a study of 2,000 Britons by Ordnance Survey finds that a number of tasks once considered essential everyday skills are growing scarce as computers, smartphones, GPS units and other tech devices streamline modern life.
So thanks, Mom. At least I know that as modern as I am, a big part of me is still traditional.
Ten skills that are fading fast:
1. Reading a map.
2. Using a compass.
3. Knowing how to tie different knots.
4. Darning socks, which means fixing holes in them.
5. Looking something up in a book by using the index.
6. Knowing how to format a letter.
7. Knowing measurement conversions (such as four quarts in a gallon).
8. Spelling and grammar.
9. Building a fire.
10. Having good penmanship, because no one writes anything anymore.
