With summer here, maybe you just feel like cruising somewhere with no plans or prep - just hop in the car and go somewhere. Where to go? Here are a few ideas.

  • Canyon Road

Sure, taking the highway between Yakima to Ellensburg is faster by about 10 minutes, but the Canyon Road is far more scenic. If I have the spare time, I'll open for this route.

  • Moxee

One of the shorter cruises in Yakima, but I love this stretch as you get to drive by all the hop fields. This is especially nice in late summer as all the hops are in full bloom.

  • Summitview - and Beyond!

Have you ever driven to Highland High School from Yakima? Though you might not find it much of a destination, Sunnyside avenue, between Yakima and Tieton City, has a nice look to it near the hills. It's also a great spot to star gaze without the pollution of town.

  • 16th and Gilbert Rd.

The shortest trip on this list, basically a few blocks long, is nice because it passes by an orchard full of sprinklers. If you time it just right, you can get the summer mist of sprinklers through your car window cooling you off for a moment.

  • Highway 12

When in doubt, you can take highway 12 through Naches to White Pass. You don't have to make it all the way to White Pass if you don't want to. Just through the forest area is always nice for summer.
