Mere weeks after Variety first reported that Brie Larson was the frontrunner to play superhero Captain Marvel, the company made the casting official at San Diego Comic Con.

Marvel made the announcement that the Oscar-winning actress would play the lead in the studio's first woman-led superhero film during a panel at the convention on Saturday evening (July 23). After the news was shared, Larson tweeted a photo of herself wearing a Marvel Studios baseball cap, writing, "Call me Captain Marvel."

Rumors of the Room actress being considered for the iconic superhero role first began circulating back in 2015.

When MTV UK asked her about the potential casting, she initially mixed the character — a United States Air Force soldier named Carol Danvers — up with another Marvel Captain, Captain America, as she'd never heard of Captain Marvel.

"Oh wait no, Chris Evans is Captain America," Larson corrected herself. "Who’s Captain Marvel? I have no idea what I’m talking about. But people want me to play this? Okay, good to know. I guess I gotta start reading the comic book!"

Ironically, when Captain America himself — a.k.a. Chris Evans — was asked what he thought about the possibility of Larson getting the role during a Captain America: Civil War panel in June, he was very supportive, gushing, "I cannot say enough about Brie Larson. I think she is phenomenal, and I really hope that happens."
