Like fashion, food trends come and go. There'll be one year where everyone is craving pho. Then, the next year, everything is salted-caramel. Here's a look at the most popular food trends from the past 40 years and where you can find some great ones in Yakima.

These food trends came from a recent list from Good Housekeeping. I'll just choose a selection of them.

1976
General Tso Chicken
This is what I order almost everytime it's on the menu. My favorite in Yakima probably comes from Great Shang Hai near the overpass on Nob Hill.

1978
Croissants
When it comes to this buttery, flaky pastry, they don't come any finer than our friends at Essencia Artisan Bakery on 3rd off of Yakima Ave. next to Ron's.

1982
Creme Brulee
This rich custard topped with a crispy layer of caramelized sugar is one of my favorite desserts. My pick for best in Yakima goes to Creekside West on 40th and Washington.

1988
Sushi
I remember when sushi was chic in 1988. Though I didn't try it for myself until many years later, I can't get enough of it, now! Yakima has a few options. I'd suggest Kyoto's Sushi and Steak House on 24th and Nob Hill as well as Ozeki's on 16th and Summitview. Both are oishii.

2002
Organic Food
We're very fortunate we live in an agriculture paradise. No need to look any further than our own Farmer's Market every Sunday on 3rd Street off Yakima ave.

2005
Cupcakes
This was around the time when cupcakes were everywhere on TV in cooking and reality shows. Shorty's on 3rd and even our local grocery stores aren't bad.

2011
Hummus
I'm still not the biggest fan of hummus, personally, but I can't get enough of the hummus at Kabob House. You can find them on 28th and Nob Hill at Rainier Square.

Again, see the full list of every year at Good Housekeeping's website. I thought it was pretty interesting and certainly made me hungry for everything.
