• USDA has made available $400,000 in funding to establish the Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center.

    Agriculture Deputy Secretary Krysta Harden announced the center will be established at an 1890 Land-Grant college or university. Universities that qualify will have 30 days to apply.

    Harden stated the center “will serve as another tool for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers to get the resources they need.” She added it will also assist USDA to help beginning farmers from “all walks of life” to get a start in agriculture.

  • Exports for U.S hide, skin and leather continue setting value records with the lower cattle numbers.

    Through June, exports of these products totaled $1.43 billion, as reported by the U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association. That accounts for a 6.7 percent increase over last years export levels. This includes cattle hides, pig skins and semi-processed leathers.

    The associations Stephen Sothmann said “The hide, skin and leather industry in the U.S. continues to cement its reputation as an agricultural export engine, despite ongoing challenges related to cattle hide supplies, pig skin market access barriers.”
