Maroon 5 canceled their two scheduled China shows last week, and it could all be due to a tweet regarding the Dalai Lama.

Various news outlets, including the BBC and CNN, reported that keyboard player Jesse Carmichael posted a message on Twitter that reportedly didn't sit well with Chinese authorities.

"Happy Birthday America (and The Dalai Lama too) sang happy birthday to his holiness today," Carmichael tweeted on July 6, but the tweet has since been deleted.

Time Out Beijing added more information that further proves that it could be due to Carmichael's tweet: "Maroon 5 has reportedly ‘pulled out’ from their Beijing show. We use the phrasing loosely, since we hear musings about Maroon 5 being prevented from performing by our political friends up above," the culture magazine said.

Beijing Time Out also reported that Maroon 5 member attended the Dalai Lama's birthday summit in California. "This is all an artist needs to get a big X on their visa application."

China hasn't had the best relationship with the Dalai Lama. The holy leader has been living in exile in India since 1959.

However, Maroon 5 aren't the only musical act who've been barred from performing in China: Oasis, Bjork, and James Blake have also been restricted from performing in the country.

Despite speculation, both Live Nation and Maroon 5 have yet to make a comment.
