Robin Givens was in Yakima this week to speak at the YWCA's Annual Luncheon, where she shared her journey of being a survivor of domestic violence. She ended the speech with a nod to finally feeling like she is at the END of that treacherous journey. (KUDOS, to you, Ms. Givens!)

Before the event began, I walked over to my seat at the round table, which seated 10 people, and right away, I noticed there were two plates of food in front of me. I lifted the silver lid to reveal a plate containing one gorgeous hunk of salmon, plus three juicy strips of baked chicken, along with a salad. There was a lemon cupcake and chocolate cupcake on the other plate. Not only was I going to have the privilege of hearing Robin Givens speak to a crowd in Yakima (YAY!), I was also going to enjoy every last bite of the delicious lunch that the Convention Center caterers had prepared!

In between bites of food and conversation with the other guests at my table, I looked around and noticed that there was nearly a THOUSAND people in attendance to hear Robin Givens' speech!

Earlier that morning, I had a chance to meet Robin Givens after her tour of the YWCA facilities. She answered questions from the press about the purpose of her trip and what message she wanted to give to women (from any background) who have or are still experiencing domestic violence and abuse.

If you don't know me, I am really into fashion, hair, and makeup, so of course in addition to hearing Robin's message, I was also ready to see what the legendary actress was wearing! (I wondered about how would she wear her hair, what kind of makeup would she wear, and what about her shoes?!)

Ms. Givens did NOT disappoint! She was wearing a black sleeveless top on her svelte frame, along with some black leggings that had a smooth strip of black leather running all the way down on both sides of the legs. She wore leopard mules, and her makeup was on point, hunty! She accentuated her brown eyes with sea green eyeshadow (I think that was the color) and some thick black eyeliner and mascara.

Robin Givens came to Yakima and she showed up and showed out! She did not come to Yakima to play with you hoes! She looked flawless.

FLAW-LESS!!

I felt myself fan-girling, like that time Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt met one of her favorite celebrities on an airplane:

At some point during the YWCA luncheon, I zoned out during Robin's speech and began to reflect on my own family's past history with domestic violence. My grandfather was very physically abusive to my grandmother and other family members, leaving bruises and a lifetime of pain behind; one of my uncles spent many years in prison for a domestic abuse incident which ended up with my aunt throwing bleach in his face and he stabbed her with a knife and killed her in retaliation.

After hearing Robin bravely sharing her experiences, I just had to give her a hug! I have been a fan of hers since the movie "Boomerang," starring herself, Eddie Murphy and Tisha Campbell-Martin. After she had answered a few questions from the media, and just before she headed off back to her hotel to get ready for the luncheon, I asked, "Is it OK to ask you about the movie 'Boomerang?' "

Robin chuckled and said, "Well, what do you want to know?"

"I would love to hear about your experience on the set. It seemed as though it was a lot of fun to make that movie!" I said, feeling rather shy.

Robin went on to say that she had a lot of fun on the set and that she and Eddie Murphy had been friends for a long time, back to when she was attending Sarah Lawrence College.

Oh, snap!

In the last few minutes of her speech, Robin revealed that her youngest son, William, (who is an avid Seattle Seahawks fan) is competing in the Junior Sectionals at the Yakima Tennis Club this summer! Perhaps you'll get to celeb-spot her. She told everyone that if we see her to wave hi!
