With Christmas around the corner, many are already in full swing of doing what they do every year. Not because they want to, per-say, but because it's tradition. Not that I'm sheltered, but I grew up with a different kind of family who traditionally hasn't done many of the usual traditions. Many of those I still haven't done, personally, to this day. Here are five things that you probably do every year that I've never done.

    Drink Egg Nog

Let me start by saying that I have at least tasted it. I had enough to coat my upper lip so I could lick it off and it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. But tasting isn't the same as drinking, or guzzling as I see some do during the holidays. As fantastic and tasty as it may look, the thought of drinking a combination of milk, eggs and sugar is a little disgusting to me. If you add flour you can make pancakes, it's basically non-frozen ice cream. I'll pass.

    Eat Fruit Cake

From what I understand, homemade fruit cake can be quite good. the only fruitcake I've ever seen are the pre-packaged, soulless, holiday gift-style fruit cakes that are so full of preservatives they seems like they could outlast Twinkies for shelf-life. Basically a candied cake or sometimes bread with candied fruit in it. Seeing how I like my bread to be as low maintenance as possible, with a little whole grains as possible, the thought of fruit cake doesn't appeal to me. Again, I'll pass.

    Door-to-door Christmas Caroling

Being an alumni of the A.C. Davis Aeolian Choir I have, indeed, gone caroling - kind of. We'd sing as a choir in the middle of the mall, in front of our school, at nursing homes and more. But I've never gone to someone's house, knocked on the door and as they answer just belt out some Jingle Bells. I don't know if I'd dare do that in Yakima unless it was someone I knew. I love to sing, just never got around to sing to an audience of whomever opens the door.

    Worn a Christmas Sweater

Not for lack of wanting to wear one, but I've never owned one. Not just 'ugly sweaters', either. In fact if I did get a Christmas sweater I'd make sure it's the ugliest one I could find for that reason alone. I've never owned a Christmas sweater; therefore I've never worn one.

    Watched 'Elf' Starring Will Ferrell

Here's how every conversation in the past 8 years has gone about this subject.

Them: Do you remember that scene in the movie 'Elf'?

Me: No, I haven't seen it

Them: What you mean "I haven't seen it?" You haven't seen Elf?

    Me: No, not yet.

Them: Elf, with Will Ferrel? You seriously haven't seen it?

    Me: I haven't, sorry.

Them: DUDE! You Need To See It!

Me: Then buy it for me.

And that's when the conversations changes subjects. Almost word-for-word, everyone conversation seems to be about like that.

I haven't seen it. Not because I didn't want to, but I don't watch a lot of movies and that movie wasn't a priority to me at the time, or has been for the last 8 years. I'm sure it's hilarious so I'll catch it on TV - maybe set the DVR to record it and scratch that one off my list for next year.
