Alanis Morissette’s Former Manager Jailed for Stealing Millions From Singer
Alanis Morissette is washing her hands clean of her former manager — Jonathan Schwartz, who stole millions of dollars from the singer, has been sentenced to jailtime.
Schwartz, who admitting to embezzling $5 million from Morissette between 2010 and 2014 — and more from additional clients and artists — pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false tax return, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He has been sentenced by a California judge to six years in prison.
Morrissette testified at the May 3 hearing and "has been shaken to the core," THR reports.
Schwartz wrote an open letter published in THR in April in which he insisted his actions were fueled by addiction to gambling. He noted that he's become sober over the past year and urged the court to consider a sentence of a year in jail, a subsequent year in house arrest and 2,000 hours of community service.
"At first, I 'borrowed' a little from clients, with the hopes that I would pay them back if I won that night's bet. That snowballed, and as I kept losing, I kept stealing," Schwartz recalled. "I let everybody down, and for that I will spend the rest of my life asking for forgiveness and making amends to everyone I have hurt."
Schwartz will have to pay $8.6 million in restitution upon his release.
