Unlike last month, the list of August 2016 New Music Releases doesn't have any reissues. But that just means that there are great albums of all-new material from veteran artists, like Dinosaur Jr. and Of Montreal, as well as others who are looking to further establish themselves.

The month begins with Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, the 11th album from Dinosaur Jr., and fourth since the original lineup reunited in 2005. In the weeks leading up to its release, they premiered two songs, "Tiny" and "Goin Down" as well as "Solo Extractions," a supercut of all of J Mascis' guitar solos.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings had to put their career on hold as the singer began treatment for pancreatic cancer. A documentary, Miss Sharon Jones!, has been made about her struggle and return to music, and its soundtrack will be be released on Aug. 19. Another musician with a movie about her life, alt-country singer Lydia Loveless, is back with her fourth album, Real.

You'll also find music by people who are known for their work in bands. Nels Cline, the guitar genius in Wilco, is coming out with Lovers, an 18-song collection of originals and chestnuts from the Great American Songbook that he recorded with a 23-piece orchestra. And John Paul White is releasing Beulah, his first solo effort since the 2014 breakup of the Civil Wars. Prior to forming that band, he had one other credit to his name, 2008's The Long Goodbye.
