Live in-person Cinco de Mayo events from the Yakima Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the City of Sunnyside have been canceled this year due to the coronavirus, but that doesn't mean there's no local fun to enjoy!

The Columbia Basin College Arts Center is putting on a show for the whole region to enjoy and the best part is that it is FREE to attend. It's the CBC and Encanto Arts Cinco de Mayo Virtual Celebration. (They had me at the word "free".)

The Tri-Cities-based college (Pasco) has teamed up with Encanto Arts to put on a festive performance inspired by the wonders of Mexico on Wednesday, May 5th, at 8 p.m. Encanto Arts is a nonprofit that seeks to motivate youth through music and cultural awareness for underrepresented children, particularly those living in rural parts of Washington state.

Encanto Arts is a nonprofit that seeks to motivate youth through music and cultural awareness for underrepresented children, particularly those living in rural parts of Washington state.

What can we expect for this virtual Cinco de Mayo event? Music from the Chiawana Mariachi Band and headliner, Jose Iniguez, who also serves as the founder of Encanto Arts! Iniguez is an opera tenor based in Seattle.

The CBC Arts Center is now offering special scholarships to rural Hispanic and Latino students who wish to pursue a degree in the performing arts. What a wonderful opportunity for these youth who may not have any other resource available to get the training and credentials needed for a career of this magnitude!

We can look forward to winding down our Cinco de Mayo pandemic festivities by watching the event on Facebook here.
