Have you noticed the hidden fairytale bus stop in Yakima? If you blink, you'll miss it!

WHERE IS IT?

It's right there on Tieton Drive, across the street from a car wash, a fabric & craft store, and a hardware store. Perhaps those are the magical ingredients needed to cast the spell on this whimsical transit location.

HOW DID I FIND IT?

I stumbled upon the bus stop almost a decade ago when I had to ride the Yakima Transit for a few months because I was without a car. It was extremely rough traveling about town on a bus with a toddler during the wintertime, I wouldn't wish that on anybody (except my worst of enemies). On one particular cold, blistery night, I took the bus down to the old Jack-Sons Sports Bar & Clubhouse Lounge to watch the Seahawks play. The place was crowded that night and the atmosphere was jovial and happy. I needed to get home, though, because my little one was getting tired. I didn't have enough money to get a taxi home and I had already asked my friends for a ride someplace one too many times. I did what I had to do: walk all the way home, with a toddler in a stroller, in the snow, at night time.

IS IT A SECRET MAGICAL PORTAL TO ANOTHER DIMENSION?

Along the way home, we passed the hidden, whimsical fairytale bus stop. It was lit up with soft fluorescent garden lights. The seat and awning were made out of wood. It was protected on either side by a wall made out of twigs. It was magical. As I shuffled through the snow down the street to my house that night, I made up a story in my head about the bus stop being a secret magical portal to another dimension, just waiting to be discovered by a lonely, broke, down on her luck single mother like me. I envisioned the portal would be discovered just like the wardrobe in that book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I always have silly stories running through my head like that, I guess.

FAST FORWARD TO TODAY:

Fast forward to today, I drove past the bus stop to take in its beauty for old times sake. To my horror, the bus stop had lost its shine, in fact, it looked disheveled and overtaken by garbage. Even the wood in the awning and seats looked withered and unloved by time. It broke my heart to see it. I decided to drive past it again, this time at night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the bus stop's mystical lights and whimsical tidings. The lights are no longer there! Sad. It's the end of an era, I suppose.
